CEO Update: May 10, 2024

"More Narcan – Not Better" 

​This week, I attended the NYS EMS Council in Troy with colleagues from the Southwestern Region. It was a valuable opportunity to connect with EMS leaders, exchange ideas, and stay informed about EMS developments in New York State. Dr. Dailey co-authored a study for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) that compared the effects of two doses of naloxone (Narcan) for opioid overdoses: 8 mg versus the usual 4 mg dose. The study's key takeaway was succinctly put by Dr. Dailey: "More Narcan – Not Better." He emphasized the importance of providing respiratory support alongside Narcan administration, highlighting that giving more Narcan isn't always the best solution. Additionally, there were discussions about Nalmefene, a new opioid antagonist. The SEMAC reiterated that Narcan remains the only opioid antagonist approved for use by public safety personnel.

Infant Safe Sleep 5K Run & Walk 

This past week, Sydney, our Safe Kids coordinator, organized our first-ever Infant Safe Sleep 5K Run & Walk at St. Bonaventure University. I'd like to express my gratitude to everyone who was able to join us to show their support for this important cause. Your participation helps raise awareness about the significance of safe sleep practices for infants. 
Thanks to the generosity of numerous individuals and organizations, we've garnered significant support for our Cribs for Kids program. This ensures that every baby in our community has access to a safe sleep environment, promoting their well-being and safety. 
Regrettably, because of my commitment to a meeting in Albany, I was unable to attend. Nonetheless, I received numerous reports from participants praising Sydney and Jordan for their excellent representation of Southern Tier Health Care System at the event.
