Karen Madden Recognized for Her Impact on Rural Health

Congratulations to Karen Madden, Director of the Center for Health Care Policy and Resource Development at the New York State Department of Health, on receiving the 2026 Calico Quality Leadership Award. I have had the privilege of working with Karen for the last 25 years and have seen firsthand her unwavering commitment to improving health care in rural New York.

This recognition is incredibly well deserved and reflects the lasting impact Karen has had on rural communities and the many people fortunate enough to work alongside her. Congratulations, Karen, on this outstanding achievement!

1115 Waiver Community Impact

Our 1115 Waiver work continues to make a real difference for the individuals and families we serve. Through screening and navigation, our team has helped families remain safely housed, access food and other needed resources, and reduce the stress that comes with financial and housing instability. In one case, the support helped a single parent remain housed, complete nursing school, and secure employment. In another, rental and food assistance helped prevent a family from losing their housing.

I want to thank our staff who complete the screenings, listen carefully to what each person needs, and work to connect them with the right resources. This work takes time, compassion, and follow-through, and these outcomes are a direct reflection of the commitment you bring to this program every day.
