  • File of Life | STHCS

File of Life The File of Life is a magnetized pouch containing a person’s medical information that is placed on the refrigerator in case of emergency. In rural areas, the information – obtained immediately by first responders who know right where to find it – can mean the difference between life and death. Hospital emergency departments report that the File of Life significantly speeds the triage process, especially for elderly and disoriented patients. If you or someone you know would like a File of Life please contact us

  • Paramedic Program | STHCS

Paramedic Program The application period for the 2025-26 Regional Paramedic Program is closed. The next Paramedic Program will likely begin in January 2027. Getting rural EMS providers the training they need to enhance their skills and level of care has always been difficult. Faced with a looming crisis, Southern Tier Health Care System, a rural health care network funded by the New York State Charles B. Cook Office of Rural Health, convened a group of regional EMS medical directors, EMS educators and the leaders of regional EMS agencies to find a solution in January of 2013. Working as a liaison with the New York Bureau of EMS, Southern Tier Health Care System secured permission to design a program that meets the needs of our rural area. Southern Tier Health Care System surveyed other programs that use distance-learning technology to train EMS providers to create a best-practices paramedic training program. The result was a plan to create a Regional Paramedic Program that used distance learning technology to allow this advance training in a rural community. The Regional Paramedic Program was launched the first week of January 2014, less than a year after Southern Tier Health Care System hosted the planning meeting. This program would not have been possible unless everyone was willing to work together. The cooperation speaks volumes about how a rural community can work together and make the impossible, possible. The Regional Paramedic Program represents the Power of Rural message that National Rural Health Day was created to celebrate. The UPMC Chautauqua @ WCA Paramedic program has been issued a Letter of Review by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). This letter is NOT a CAAHEP accreditation status, it is a status signifying that a program seeking initial accreditation has demonstrated sufficient compliance with the accreditation standards through the Letter of Review Self Study Report (LSSR) and other documentation. Letter of Review is recognized by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) for eligibility to take the NREMT's Paramedic credentialing examination(s). However, it is NOT a guarantee of eventual accreditation. To contact CoAEMSP: 214-703-8445/www.coaemsp.org. NREMT Test Results No graduates during the 2023 reporting year BEMS Forms & Portal

A Sexual Assault Forensic Exam (SAFE) is a medical exam to collect & preserve DNA evidence from a sexual assault. These are also often referred to as a Forensic Rape Exam (FRE) or a Rape Kit. Trained medical providers at our SAFE Centers conduct these exams & can treat injuries as well as prescribe medications to prevent pregnancies or STI’s. This exam & relevant medical care can be billed to the Office of Victim Services at no cost to you. We encourage people who have been sexually assaulted to visit one of our SAFE centers as soon as possible within 96 hours from the assault. We also suggest you do not shower, bathe, eat, or drink until the exam can be completed. However, even if you do one or several of these activities, you are still eligible for the exam. What should I expect? During the exam, you can expect the process to generally follow this outline. However, you are allowed to pause or skip steps at any point. Injuries That Need Immediate Attention – Injuries that need immediate attention will be taken care of first. History – You will be asked about your medical history, such as current medications or preexisting conditions. You also will be asked some questions which may seem personal, such as your recent sexual activity and details about the assault. This will help your SAFE provider identify where evidence could be located. Full Body Examination – Based on the details you gave your provider; this may not be an entire body examination & instead focus on relevant areas. You are allowed to decline any portion of this examination. This examination may include examining & taking samples of areas such as the mouth, nose, vagina, or anus. With your permission, your SAFE provider may take photos of the injured areas for evidence or collect your clothes for further DNA collection. Follow Up – Your provider may prescribe medications to prevent pregnancies or STI’s. You also may be scheduled for a follow-up appointment if necessary. In addition to this, you will receive information about reporting options. safe-1_orig safe-2_orig safe-3_orig Program Goals Provide timely, compassionate, patient-centered care in private settings. Syringe Epinephrine All Training Materials can be found at the following: MLREMS Syringe Epinephrine Webpage The pilot program for Check and Inject has been completed and as a result it has been adopted by the SEMAC for statewide use. The following is a statement made by the SEMAC regarding the program. "Based on the results of a State Emergency Medical Advisory Committee (SEMAC) demonstration project, the New York State Emergency Medical Service Advisory Council (SEMSCO) approved Syringe Epinephrine for Emergency Medical Technicians (Check & Inject NY) at the September 14, 2016 meeting. The project established that EMTs, with the appropriate training may administer the proper dose of epinephrine for a patient experiencing a severe anaphylactic reaction using a specific 1cc syringe. Additionally, the project realized a significant cost saving over maintaining epinephrine auto-injectors. The Commissioner of Health has approved the addition of Syringe Epinephrine and at the request of the SEMAC, this approval includes the intramuscular administration of 1:1000 epinephrine using a 1cc syringe, a 23 gauge, 1 inch intramuscular safety needle and a single dose 1:1000 epinephrine packaged in a 1mg/ml vial as an addition to the scope of practice for an EMT." Safe Kids Safe Kids Southern Tier New York is led by Southern Tier Health Care System, Inc., which provides dedicated and caring staff, operation support and other resources to assist in achieving our common goal: keeping your kids safe. Based on the needs of the community, this coalition implements evidence-based programs, such as car-seat safety, safe sleep education, and water safety, that help parents and caregivers prevent childhood injuries. About In April 2019, the Safe Kids Southern Tier New York Coalition was formed as a re-imagining of the former Southern Tier Child Health and Safety Team (CHST). For years, CHST investigated the causes of preventable child deaths and developed proactive strategies to eliminate risks. This multidisciplinary team began in Allegany County and later expanded to Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties. The team comprised professionals from multiple disciplines including public health, social services, health care, law enforcement, child welfare and behavioral health. Today, as a Safe Kids Worldwide Coalition we are able to be more broadly inclusive of the many other community professionals, services and individuals who are instrumental in the healthy and productive upbringing of children. Parents/caregivers, educators, counselors, educators and even faith leaders deserve a seat at the table.
