Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program

Southern Tier Health Care System, Inc. is working in conjunction with Olean General
Hospital to seek designation for the hospital as a Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE)
Center of Excellence through an application process with the New York State Department of
Health. The New York State Health Foundation and Division of Criminal Justice Services are
responsible for partial funding of the training. Southern Tier Health Care System will also work
with Jones Memorial Hospital and Cuba Memorial Hospital in establishing an exclusive room
for a SAFE/SANE (nurse examiner) program in their Emergency Departments. A Sexual
Assault Nurse Examiner is a physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or registered
nurse who has advanced education, training, and clinical preparation in the forensic
examination of sexual assault victims. SANE clinicians offer victims of sexual assault prompt,
compassionate care, the opportunity for counseling and therapy, and comprehensive forensic
evidence collection to ensure more effective investigations and successful prosecutions.
