Cathi, Josh and I attended the Southwestern Regional EMS Council meeting Wednesday night. We gave an update on our activities and they feel S.T.E.M.S. is on track with its work plan and they are pleased with what we are doing. We also reminded council members that S. T.E.M.S. is partnering with Penn State Erie’s Behrend College to host four six-hour training sessions at their state-of-the-art nursing simulation lab for EMS providers from Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties. The trainings will allow the providers to participate in patient care scenarios with the college’s high fidelity mannequins that can give birth, bleed, breath and talk.
The training sessions are open to all EMS providers in our tri-county catchment area. Sessions are scheduled on Saturday, Aug. 23, for Basic EMTs and Certified First Responders; Saturday, Aug. 30, for Intermediates and Basic EMTs; Monday, Sept. 15, for Advanced EMTs- Critical Care providers and Paramedics; and Saturday, Sept. 20, for Advanced EMTs-Critical Care providers and Paramedics. All sessions start at 9 a.m. A lunch will be provided for those who attend. There is no cost to attend and continuing education credits will be provided. Space is limited so anyone interested in attending a session needs to apply. For more information or an application form, contact Cathi or Josh at 372-0614 or via e-mail at cathi@sthcs.org or josh@sthcs.org.
STHCS is working to complete grant proposals to continue serving as lead agency for the local Tobacco Cessation Center and the local Reality Check program through the state’s tobacco control program. The cessation center’s catchment area will still include Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua and Wyoming counties. The state is changing the Reality Check program and is reducing the number of lead agency contracts that it awards. We are applying to cover our organization’s catchment area of Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties. I wanted to share with you that soon many of you will be receiving requests for commitment letters for the cessation center program. Your letters will be an essential part of the application and we hope you will quickly respond to our request.
