A Passion for Public Health...

I would like to congratulate Deb Nichols, the Cattaraugus County Department of Health’s
Public Health Educator, for being selected for Public Health Works! Honor Roll. She was
selected because of her passion for public health. Deb has worked for the Cattaraugus
County Health Department for 15 years and in that time has partnered with STHCS staff to
work on various programs and events. Additionally, she has helped us out with obtaining
statistics and other information that we have needed. With all she does for the county and all
the assistance she has given STHCS, she deserves the recognition that Public Health Works!
is giving her.

The Process has begun...

STHCS has began the process to find a new permanent site for the Southern Tier Child
Advocacy Center. As many of you are aware, we have handled three times the number of
cases than predicted since the center opened last September. A new, larger space would
allow us to move to the next level of funding from the state’s Office of Children and Family
Services. Additionally, to help meet the needs of the child abuse victims and their families we
have expanded our services to include mental health counseling and are planning to add
victim advocacy services. A larger site will give us room for the additional services being
offered and for multidisciplinary team members who co-locate at the center.

Grant Writing process has begun...

STHCS has started preparing grant proposals to reapply to serve as lead agency for the
Tobacco Cessation Center and the Reality Check program. The cessation center’s catchment
area will still include Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua and Wyoming counties. The state is
changing the Reality Check program and is reducing the number of lead agency contracts that
it awards. We are applying to cover our organization’s catchment area of Allegany,
Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties. If you have any thoughts or ideas on how you would
like to work with these programs, contact our grant writer, Dawn Karl at dawn@sthcs.org.

On Track...

This week, we submitted our mid-year reports to the National Children’s Alliance for the three
grants we received from the organization for the child advocacy center. I’m happy to report
that we are on track with completing all the project activities and meeting the necessary
milestones for each of the grants. We have received more than $88,000 from the organization
and our grant period for each grant ends in December.
