Tobacco control staff attends training in Rochester

Our Reality Check and Tobacco Cessation Center staff attended a social marketing training
session on Tuesday at the University of Rochester. The training was conducted by Cicatelli
Associates and was required for all of the state’s tobacco control program staff. They learned
how to develop projects and interventions including strategies to help obtain goals and
objectives of the projects and interventions. The training session also included information on
effective research methods, how to determine a target audience, how to choose project
partners to maximize results and who to try to reach after a project has ended.

NYS Health Foundation grant proposal submitted

We submitted a grant proposal to the New York State Health Foundation seeking funding to
establish a child advocacy center in Allegany County. We have discovered that a majority of
the physically and sexually abused children in Allegany County are not receiving the care they
should because families and multidisciplinary team members consider it a burden to travel to
the CAC in Olean. If we are awarded this grant, we will use the money to secure facility space
and to hire a program coordinator for the center. The expected outcome of the project is to
serve a larger number of child abuse victims at a fully operational and sustainable child
advocacy center that is centrally located in Allegany County. The foundation is expected to
make their decision regarding the proposal by November.

Jones Memorial hosts workshops on CAC and mandated reporting

Karen Hill, our CAC director conducted three workshops on Tuesday along with Steve Rennie
from Allegany County CPS at Jones Memorial Hospital. Approximately 45 people attended,
representing various professionals including nursing staff, nurse practitioners, EMT’s and
hospital supervisors.

Karen gave an overview of the child advocacy center including what a CAC is, who’s involved
in the multidisciplinary team (MDT), how referrals are made and how cases are processed.
She also discussed how the MDT conducts forensic interviews and investigations as well as
what services are available through the CAC.

Steve presented instructions on mandated reporting including how to identify alleged
abuse/maltreatment, how and when to report abuse and the responsibilities/liabilities of a
mandated reporter including changes to the mandated reporter law.

S.A.F.E. planning continues

We continue to work on the Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (S.A.F.E.) program. We are
scheduling clinical training sessions for the 18 providers from the tri-county area who
completed the didactic portion of S.A.F.E. training in November. We also are trying to secure
all the necessary equipment for the program. I’ve attended several planning meetings with
project partners in the past few weeks. Our goal is to have a S.A.F.E. program, which meets
the needs of sexual assault victims while ensuring their safety, up and running by August
2008.
