Spitzer's Budget

I along with several other STHCS members attended the Western New York Healthcare
Association’s meeting about Governor Eliot Spitzer’s budget proposal and how it affects health
care finances on Thursday in Amherst. Ray Sweeney, executive vice president of HANYS, and
Robin Frank, vice president of governmental affairs and continuing care, discussed the details
of the budget and the reaction of the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS).
While there are some positives in his proposal, there are also some suggested cuts that are a
cause for concern. I’ll be sending you information on how we can share these concerns with
our elected officials.

Forensic Interviewing training...

The Southern Tier Child Advocacy Center is holding forensic interview training today at the
STHCS office. Amy Russell, a forensic interview trainer, will conduct the training for members
of our multidisciplinary teams. We are holding two separate sessions, one in the morning and
the other this afternoon, to accommodate team members’ schedules. Each session will include
an overview of forensic interviewing protocols/best practices, potential blocks and problems in
the interview process, guidelines for age-appropriate interview questions and suggestibility
issues for children/interacting with the child.

Community Advisory Committee Member

As a member of the New York State Health Foundation’s Community Advisory Committee, I
coordinated a conference call between Universal Primary Care (UPC) representatives and
officials from the foundation to discuss possible funding for UPC. While there wasn’t funding
available for what UPC was seeking, there is the potential for some funding to help ensure the
viability of the organization. Following the conference call, I received an e-mail from the
foundation’s president stating that he was happy that I had made the foundation aware of a
potential grantee. He indicated that is one of the reasons the Community Advisory Committee
was established. The foundation is interested in helping UPC and we had a follow-up
conference call Thursday to continue talks on possible funding.
